As I reflect over the Thanksgiving weekend with our nation's 250th anniversary fast approaching, I’m reminded of the courage and sacrifice that helped build our nation and share gratitude to the 56 brave signers of our nation’s founding charter, the Declaration of Independence. Most people recognize John Hancock, whose bold signature is familiar, and his story of success is often celebrated.  

But many of the other 56 signers who helped secure our freedom suffered much more personal losses and tragedies in relative obscurity— and their stories deserve our gratitude as well. 

• John Hart of New Jersey lost his home and his family as he fled invading forces. He died having never rebuilt his life.

• Richard Stockton also of New Jersey was captured, starved, and returned home to find everything he owned destroyed. 

• Thomas Nelson Jr., Governor of Virginia, ordered American troops to fire on his own home during the Siege of Yorktown when the British occupied it. He lived the rest of his life in financial ruin.

These men — and their wives and families, along with hundreds of thousands of people across the colonies and beyond — gave up their safety, their health, and often their livelihoods because they believed in a country that did not yet fully exist. Some never lived to see the freedoms they helped secure. 

There is a memorial to the 56 Signers in Constitution Gardens on the National Mall, originally dedicated for the 1976 Bicentennial. It is in poor condition and needs our attention to ensure it continues to properly honor our founders. As we approach the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026, the Trust for the National Mall is working to raise the funds needed to restore this 36-acre landscape as a new gift to the nation, providing a thriving and inviting historic park for the public to enjoy.  

The restoration of the memorial is just one of the Trust’s legacy projects to honor America’s 250th. This is Our Monumental Moment.  We are grateful to the many corporate and philanthropic partners who have already stepped forward to support this important work. More funding is needed to begin the restoration of the Memorial to the 56 Signers and to support critical projects and programs on the National Mall. We hope you’ll join us and be a part of history for 2026— whether as a volunteer, a donor, or simply an ambassador who helps promote the important work ahead.  

Inspired by America’s 250th, the Trust recently launched a new digital learning platform called the National Mall Gateway, which brings the stories behind our monuments and memorials, historic structures, and landscapes on America's Front Yard to life. It’s designed for students, teachers, families, and anyone who wants to understand the deeper history of the National Mall and the moments of hope, reflection, and remembrance it represents. Take a virtual tour here.

The Trust for the National Mall was honored to bring its work to honor America’s 250th on the National Mall north for a Monumental Evening in Boston on November 12. Trust Board Member John Drew and THE DREW COMPANY hosted a special event spotlighting the National Mall as the greatest symbol of American independence and freedom in the city that helped inspire the Revolution.

The event featured remarks from author and historian Daniel Dain (President & Chairman Dain, Torpy, Le Ray, Wiest & Garner) and highlighted Our Monumental Moment - The Campaign for the National Mall, which invites all of America to help the Trust build legacy projects in honor of America’s 250th Anniversary.

Donor Appreciate Week featured off a “Blossoms and Breakfast” event, which offered a vibrant morning of connection and celebration with our donors and volunteers and honored the beauty of the iconic cherry trees in all four seasons on the National Mall. We were honored to welcome President General Ginnie Storage of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, who spotlighted about DAR’s monumental gift to the Cherry Tree Endowment.in honor of America’s 250th anniversary. The DAR recently announced a $2 million gift to endow the cherry trees and their celebrated blossoms for generations to come.

The week continued with a Fall Monument’s Tour, hosted in partnership with Big Bus Tours. Guided by Tim Wright of Attucks Adams Tours, we explored the monuments and memorials that have shaped history, and explored the ways that donations have supported every part of America’s Front Yard.

The National Mall is the iconic American space that remembers and honors our nation's history and the legacy of military service 365 days a year. But Veterans Day always provides a special opportunity for all to pause for reflection and remembrance and honor U.S. Military servicemembers and veterans.

This Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11, join us for special ceremonies to honor all who serve. What better way to recognize our veterans and military servicemen and women than by visiting the memorials built in their honor on the National Mall. While some events will be modified due to the lapse in federal government funding, ceremonies listed below will proceed on Tuesday.

The Trust is proud to partner with the National Park Service to restore, preserve and enrich the National Mall, including leading signature restoration projects and providing educational experiences and volunteer opportunities to connect visitors to history. Our mission on America's Front Yard takes on new meaning and significance as we approach the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026.

Daniel Sernovitz of the Washington Business Journal highlighted the National Mall Gateway in an October 3, 2025 story, “D.C. Tourism Industry Responds to the Government Shutdown.” Read an excerpt and explore the full story below.

“The Trust for the National Mall, the nonprofit that raises money to help maintain “American's front yard,” in September launched the National Mall Gateway featuring photos, educational videos and 360-degree video tours.

“It wasn't specifically launched in anticipation of a government shutdown, but the timing works. In fact, its seeds were planted during the Covid-19 pandemic, when many of those same sites were closed to the public to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. 

“The site, developed in partnership with the National Park Service, takes visitors the historic Lockkeeper's House, which dates to 1837, and the U.S. Park Police Horse Stables and Education Center.

"Right now, with the shutdown closings that are happening, it's like, 'Oh, we can't do this tour on the Mall,'" trust President and CEO Catherine Townsend told me in an interview. "Well, we have a 360 of the Lockkeeper's House and the horse stables, so people can visit without actually visiting."

“The trust has taken an active role in projects like the Lockkeeper's House, which was boarded up for 40 years before it reopened as a sort of mini-museum, the U.S. Park Police Horse Stables and Education Center, which opened in 2023, and the planned renewal of historic Lafayette Park. 

“With the gateway, it set out to enhance the experience for in-person visitors, make it possible for others to take in those sites from afar, and to provide an educational opportunity for students in classrooms around the world to learn more about those places and the people that inspired them, per Jeremy Goldstein, vice president of education programs at the Trust. Put another way, "We wanted to bring the Mall to people in a way that it's never been seen before."The trust launched the site on Sept. 17, which is also Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, which recognizes the day in 1787 when the U.S. Constitution was adopted.

“Its launch…was timed to ensure the gateway was ready for public consumption ahead of the U.S. Semiquincentennial, the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, in July 2026.

"We decided we wanted to leverage this moment in history to bring attention to the National Mall," Townsend said.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution joins the Trust for the National Mall’s Our Monumental Moment campaign as Legacy Leader of the Cherry Tree Endowment

WASHINGTON, D.C. – (October 2, 2025) As the countdown to America’s 250th anniversary advances, the Trust for the National Mall and National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) announce that DAR is making a transformative $2 million gift to the nation as the foundational Legacy Leader of the Trust’s Cherry Tree Endowment. The DAR gift will support the National Park Service’s work to ensure the iconic cherry blossoms endure and bloom for generations to come and will celebrate this commitment with leaders participating in an event on the National Mall on October 11, 2025. The DAR is supporting the Trust’s Our Monumental Moment campaign, which will focus on legacy restoration projects, civic learning opportunities, and volunteer programming to ensure the National Mall endures and inspires for 2026 and beyond. 

The gift was first introduced to the membership at the DAR annual convention, the 134th Continental Congress, by DAR President General Ginnie Sebastian Storage. She will lead the organization through the U.S. Semiquincentennial, the 250th anniversary of the United States, which will include national events, local commemorations of the milestone as well as membership and chapter involvement around the world.

“On the cusp of the 250th anniversary of the birth of our nation, it is a priority for the DAR to support activities promoting this important milestone. We are proud that our DAR National Headquarters is a neighbor to America’s front yard, the National Mall, where millions of Americans will have a front row seat to the celebrations of our country’s 250th anniversary! It is our sincere pleasure to make a lasting gift to the nation as the Legacy Leader of the Cherry Tree Endowment with a $2 million contribution to the Trust for the National Mall’s Our Monumental Moment campaign,” said Ginnie Sebastian Storage, DAR President General. “The cherry trees on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. are iconic symbols of our nation’s capital and bring joy to visitors from all over the country and world every spring. The Trust for the National Mall is the premier nonprofit philanthropic organization that partners with the National Park Service to bring private funding to restore and preserve the National Mall. The DAR gift will be celebrated with a special event taking place by the iconic Tidal Basin cherry trees on Saturday, October 11, 2025, with Storage and other DAR leaders from around the country gathering to show appreciation to National Park Service Rangers and volunteers. The Trust for the National Mall will share information on the history and care of the cherry trees and their significance to the Nation’s capital and the country. The event falls on the 10th anniversary of the Daughters of the American Revolution’s National DAR Day of Service, which began as an opportunity for DAR members to highlight the organization’s commitment to volunteerism nationwide in honor of the day of the founding of the national DAR organization 135 years ago. DAR is also a founding partner of the America250 America Gives initiative and the service event will highlight the importance of volunteerism and giving back to the country as a way to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the nation.

In partnership with the National Park Service and the National Cherry Blossom Festival, the Trust for the National Mall raises money for the Cherry Tree Endowment to provide a maintenance fund that helps take care of the trees in perpetuity. Interest from the Cherry Tree Endowment will provide critical funds to the National Park Service’s tree maintenance team for annual care and maintenance, including tree pruning, soil remediation and select tree replacement plantings. GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN LIMITS ACCESS TO THE NATIONAL MALL, WHILE NATIONAL MALL GATEWAY – OUR NEW DIGITAL RESOURCE – REMAINS OPEN 

The federal government shutdown is affecting the National Park Service’s ability to welcome visitors and maintain select facilities on the National Mall. As the nonprofit, nonpartisan partner of the National Park Service, the Trust for the National Mall will continue raising private funds to restore, preserve, and enrich the visitor experience—and to help ensure continuity for the National Mall as needed. 

The National Mall remains open. Iconic sites such as the Lincoln Memorial and Jefferson Memorial are fully accessible, though federal buildings and indoor sites including the Washington Monument tour, Lockkeeper’s House and the U.S. Park Police Horse Stables Education Center will be closed. In compliance with the shutdown, our Volunteers-in-Parks will also not be on site to help welcome and educate visitors. 

To support visitors during this time, the Trust encourages families, educators, and students to explore the  National Mall Gateway. This new digital platform developed with the National Park Service provides historical facts, stories, and exclusive 360-degree video tours of sites across the National Mall—including access to sites that are currently closed. 

Some upcoming Trust for the National Mall events and tours may need to be adjusted due to the shutdown. We appreciate your patience and continued support as we work to ensure the National Mall remains a place of reflection, inspiration, and pride for all.

The third annual National Mall of Pickleball, presented by the Trust for the National Mall and Humana brought players and spectators to America’s Front Yard, bringing  "moves that serve" —in every sense of the word—serving up community, connection and fun. In its new location — between the U.S. Capitol and the Washington Monument on the National Mall — this fun, free, three-day event was more popular than ever before.

Across three days, thousands of fans and players took in a healthy cooking demonstration with the Humana Foundation and area students, pro play from DC Pickleball Team and the Association of Pickleball Players, all-inclusive knock out rounds on center court, DMV Invitational, Veteran Volley, Media Match and the Ultimate Duos competitions, walk-on court play and so much more. The event celebrated the way that pickleball builds community, connection and good health for all, in the place for all, the National Mall.

The Trust was honored to continue this beloved annual event with its generous partner Humana, sponsor of National Mall of Pickleball and lead partner for the Trust for the National Mall’s Our Monumental Moment: The Campaign for the National Mall. Event Highlights

• Opening day was filled with dinks, community and excitement on America's Front Yard. Players were bringing "Moves That Serve" on center court and all the side courts for advanced sign-ups and walk-on play! Spectators took in a healthy cooking demonstration "In the Kitchen," professional play on center court, an all-inclusive knock out round and a lively Media Match among top news bureaus that saw the Washington Post retain its title of King of the Hill. Opening day also featured a tournament among Washington, D.C. area pickleball clubs, where Village Pickle and DC Fray took home the top honors in each of their divisions.

• Day two saw no shortage of action! The day kicked off with the Veterans Volley, celebrating and honoring the service of U.S. veterans and the important community that supports them. The tournament brought veterans and players of all ages on court for a friendly round-robin. Congratulations to the the U.S. Army team from Veterans in Pickleball (VIP) for taking home the win against fellow VIP members from the U.S. Air Force in an exciting final match.

• National Mall of Pickleball's Ultimate Duo Challenge brought together teams from across the country who entered a contest to join us on the National Mall by sharing an essay about how pickleball changed their lives and helped build friendship. The eight teams selected from various regions of the U.S. joined us for a welcome reception and a special tour of the National Mall on Friday. They took to the courts Saturday, with one sensational pair taking home the win in the Ultimate Duo Challenge. Congratulations to Matthew and Nam!

• Nonprofit teams competed in the Changemaker's Cup, with Bright Focus Foundation winning the title of the ultimate "do-gooder" of National Mall of Pickleball against runner-up National Park Foundation. The day was punctuated by two exciting and competitive rounds of Knock-Out, which welcomed everybody out to play on center court on the National Mall. 

• On Day Three the Association of Pickleball Players (APP) and the D.C. Pickleball Team (DCPT) stole the show with a fast-paced Pro Showcase as we closed out the National Mall of Pickleball 2025! The last day of play was full of pro power, crowd-pleasing clinics, packed courts, packed stands and the final rounds of crowd favorite "knock-out." The National Mall, America's Front Yard, was truly alive with pickleball spirit and community.

National Mall of Pickleball celebrates the generous support of our partners at HUMANA and the HUMANA Foundation, and our mission with the National Park Service to restore, preserve and elevate the National Mall as a vibrant space for all. On the courts and through our dynamic programming throughout the weekend, we had a blast and made a "dink" on history once again, spotlighting the ways that pickleball brings players together, across all generations and skill levels, to stay active, healthy and connected.

As America’s 250th anniversary in 2026 quickly approaches, the Trust for the National Mall launched its new digital learning platform, the National Mall Gateway, bringing American history and civics to life and inviting students to experience the National Mall like never before. The new digital and onsite platform was launched on Constitution Day, celebrating the signing of the nation’s foundational document on September 17, 1787.

Trust President and CEO Catherine Townsend officially launched the Gateway at the Civics, Citizenship, and the Constitution Summit, hosted by More Perfect and iCivics at American University last week on September 17.

The Gateway is an enduring legacy project inspired by America’s historic 250th anniversary in 2026 — inviting students and visitors to experience the National Mall for this monumental moment in history. Demand for content and tools for learning from students around the world and the tens of millions of visitors to the nation’s capital continues to grow as we approach 2026.

The National Mall Gateway was developed to meet that demand by the Trust for the National Mall in partnership with the National Park Service and with support from visionary funders, led by HP, Inc..

The Inaugural Congressional Pickleball Match brought “The Hill” to the National Mall for an unforgettable evening of bipartisan sport, fun and charity on September 18, featuring America’s new favorite pastime on America’s Front Yard. 

The Trust for the National Mall was proud to team up with Congressional Sports for Charity, the presenters of the Congressional Baseball Game, for this inaugural match, featuring a bipartisan group of U.S. senators and representatives, including members of the Pickleball Caucus.  Generous sponsors of the event included Toyota and AARP, with in-kind support from Anheuser-Busch, Joola and the Sports, Fitness and Industry Association.

Nine members of Congress battled it out against the backdrop of the U.S Capitol building and the great green lawn of the National Mall, with a breathtaking view of the setting sun at the Washington Monument. The round robin tournament featured play on both Center Court and side courts. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (WV) served as the unofficial captain for the event, hitting the courts with Senate colleagues Sen. Bernie Moreno (OH), Sen. Andy Kim (NJ) and Sen. Kristin Gillibrand (NY). Rep. Sharice Davids (KS), Rep. Jake Ellzey (TX) and Rep. Jimmy Panetta (CA) brought A-game and hustle to the courts. Rep. Morgan Luttrell (TX) and Rep. August Pfluger (TX) teamed up to make for a formidable duo in matching game jerseys from the Lone Star State. And Sen. Kim made it a family affair, bringing several generations onto the court for a Kim-family pickleball exhibition.

As fans of politics and pickleball filled the stands at sundown, the final match saw Sen. Capito and Sen. Moreno take on Rep. Davids and Rep. Ellzey with fast-paced footwork, dinks, dives and battles “in the kitchen.” Senators Capito and Moreno came out on top as 2025 Congressional Pickleball champions!

New Digital Civic Learning Platform Transforms America’s Front Yard into the Greatest Living History Classroom

WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 17, 2025) – In celebration of Constitution Day, the Trust for the National Mall is proud to announce the official launch of the National Mall Gateway. This one-of-a-kind digital and onsite learning platform is designed to connect students, educators, and the public to the history and the guiding principles represented by the National Mall, its landmarks, and the historic events that have shaped the United States. 

The National Mall Gateway transforms America's most iconic public space into its greatest living history and civics classroom. Developed by the Trust for the National Mall in partnership with the National Park Service and with support from visionary funders, led by HP, Inc., the National Mall Gateway is an enduring legacy project inspired by America’s historic 250th anniversary in 2026.

 A dynamic and interactive tool, this digital platform enables in-person and virtual exploration of the people, places, and principles that tell the story of American history.

Additionally, the first classroom to sign up by emailing gateway@nationalmall.org and visit for an on-site field trip will receive special recognition and support for their pre-trip planning and experience on the National Mall. Educators and students are also encouraged to share photos of their classrooms using the Gateway on social media by tagging #NATIONALMALLGATEWAY or by submitting them directly to the Trust for the National Mall.

 Court reservations open today at 12 p.m. ET; eight duos selected to compete in the Trust for the National Mall’s Ultimate Duo Challenge on Saturday, September 20

WASHINGTON, DC – (September 10, 2025) – From September 19-21, the heart of Washington, D.C. will transform into an open-air pickleball playground for the third National Mall of Pickleball. Hosted by the Trust for the National Mall, Humana (NYSE: HUM), and the Humana Foundation, the free, three-day event brings players, fans, and community organizations together to enjoy clinics, competitions and court time on one of America’s most iconic stages.

This year’s theme, “Moves That Serve,” spotlights pickleball’s power to unite people on and off the court through a sport that’s inclusive, accessible and fun for all. This year’s event will be located at 12th Street SW, on the National Mall between Jefferson Drive and Madison Drive NW, just steps from the Smithsonian Metro Station.

Ultimate Duo Challenge: Eight Teams, One National Stage

To demonstrate the positive impact of America’s favorite past time, the Trust for the National Mall selected eight inspiring duos from across the country to compete in the Ultimate Duo Challenge on Saturday, September 20.

Finalists hail from states including Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Texas, and Virginia, each bringing powerful stories of how pickleball has served as an anchor during challenging times, created lasting connections on and off the court, and supported both mental and physical wellbeing. From one duo’s quest to play pickleball in all 50 states to another’s unexpected friendships forged through the game, this year’s Ultimate Duo finalists represent the true spirit of America’s fastest-growing sport.

“There is no better way to launch the third National Mall of Pickleball than by announcing this year’s outstanding Ultimate Duo finalists,” said Catherine Townsend, President and CEO of the Trust for the National Mall. “We are deeply grateful to all who shared their stories and celebrated the vibrant community this sport inspires. Community Play: From Changemakers to Veterans

The 2025 event will also debut new programming that rallies local organizations who exemplify the spirit of service:

·       Local leagues from across D.C., Maryland, and Virginia will compete in a DMV Invitational Tournament on Friday, September 19.

·       The Changemaker Cup on Saturday, September 20 will bring together non-profit organizations dedicated to serving communities, featuring Iona Senior Services, National Park Foundation, United Way Worldwide, Veterans in Pickleball, Volunteers for America, and Waterfront Village.

·       The Veteran Volley on Saturday, September 20 will honor US Veterans of all ages, featuring representatives from Blue Star Families, Elizabeth Dole Foundation, Honor Flight Network, Luke’s Wings, National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, and Tragedy Assistance Program For Survivors (TAPS).

Starting today, September 10, at 12 p.m. ET, the public can reserve court time in advance by joining the Pickleball Den club here. Walk-on opportunities, clinics, knockout rounds, raffles, and friendly competitive matches will also be available throughout the weekend. Programming will also feature opportunities to watch and play with pickleball pros from the Association of Pickleball Players (APP) including Lee Whitwell and Kristin Hickman and D.C. Pickleball Team’s (DCPT) newest roster including Stephan Auvergne, Daniel De La Rosa, and Coach Jim Dobran.

Happy National Pickleball Day! Back by popular demand, the Trust for the National Mall and Humana are once again bringing America’s favorite sport—pickleball—to America's Front Yard. Join us September 19-21 at 12th St SW, right outside of the Smithsonian Metro Station, for three, free days of pickleball fun.

This year’s event, “Moves that Serve,” celebrates the inclusive, accessible, and fun spirit of pickleball. With programs ranging from Center Court pro showdowns to open play, the event is open to all ages and experience levels. Eight pairs of finalists will play for the title of National Mall of Pickleball’s Ultimate Duo. Submit your duo here by August 15th here.

SCHEDULE AT A GLANCE

Friday, September 19

·       In the Kitchen: Presented by the Humana Foundation in partnership with the Emeril Lagasse Foundation, In the Kitchen will feature healthy and nutritious recipes to fuel players’ minds and spirits throughout the weekend.

·       DMV Invitational Tournament: Local leagues will compete on the courts for some friendly competition.

·       Media Match: Members of the Washington Press Corps will take to the courts for some friendly competition and their chance to be crowned the best press picklers in D.C.

·       Play with the Pros Raffle: Enter your name for a chance to face off with the pros on Center Court.

·       Knock Out: Anyone who considers themselves a pickler will be invited to play on Center Court and play for the title of National Mall of Pickleball Knock Out Champion in a friendly game of knock out to close out the courts each day.

Saturday, September 20

·       Veteran Volley: Our armed service members know the true meaning of what it takes to ‘serve.’ To honor their commitment and service, US Veterans of all ages will participate in a round-robin style tournament.

·       Ultimate Duo Challenge: Finalists from across the U.S. will participate in a tournament for their chance to be named the National Mall of Pickleball’s Ultimate Duo.

·       Changemaker Cup: We’ll search for teams from non-profit organizations dedicated to serving the senior community across health and well-being, celebrating their devotion and empowerment of healthy aging.

·       Play with the Pros Raffle: Enter your name for a chance to face off with the pros on Center Court.

·       Knock Out: Anyone who considers themselves a pickler will be invited to play on Center Court and play for the title of National Mall of Pickleball Knock Out Champion in a friendly game of knock out to close out the courts each day.

Sunday, September 21

·       APP + DCPT Showcase: Professional athletes from the Association of Pickleball Players and D.C. Pickleball Team will face off against each other on Center Court.

·       Play with the Pros Raffle: Enter your name for a chance to face off with the pros on Center Court.

·       Knock Out: Anyone who considers themselves a pickler will be invited to play on Center Court and play for the title of National Mall of Pickleball Knock Out Champion in a friendly game of knock out to close out the courts each day.

As fireworks light the skies this Independence Day, our sights are already set on a truly monumental moment – July 4, 2026, the 250th anniversary of American independence. With just one year to go, the countdown is on. On that historic day, the National Mall will serve as the nation’s front yard and center stage for the Semiquincentennial. This will be a once-in-a-generation celebration of American freedom, unity, and democracy.
